At the Heart of Asia: Hope in Myanmar and Thanksgiving in Malaysia

Faithful to the spirit of our founder, Blessed Nicolas Barré, our Sisters of the Infant Jesus continue to walk alongside the most vulnerable in Southeast Asia. Recent news in the May 2026’s webjournal ADEXTRA beautifully represents the two pillars of our mission: education that uplifts and faith that unites in Myanmar and Malaysia.
Myanmar: Sowing Hope in the Heart of the Storm
Myanmar is currently going through a "multifaceted crisis." During a recent speech in Sydney, Cardinal Charles Maung Bo (Archbishop of Yangon) spoke of the more than 3.5 million displaced people, ruined school infrastructures, and a youth deeply scarred psychologically by the war. He launched a vibrant appeal: "We remain a people of hope. Faith and hope are our answers."
Our sisters present in Myanmar translate this hope into concrete actions on the ground every day. In fact, it was at the initial request of Bishop Bo, then Bishop of Pathein, that our Burmese mission was born in 2001, driven by the momentum of Sister Fidelis. Today, established in three communities (Hledan, Thilawa, and Nyaulangone), our sisters and their lay partners dedicate themselves particularly to education.
Malaysia: The Living Heritage of Penang Recognized as Cultural Heritage
Further south, in Malaysia, the atmosphere is one of thanksgiving. On May 9, 2026, the authorities of the State of Penang officially inscribed the annual Feast of Saint Anne into the intangible cultural heritage. This celebration, which draws tens of thousands of pilgrims every July to the Minor Basilica of Bukit Mertajam, is hailed as a unique symbol of unity, local identity, and multicultural dialogue. This recognition resonates deeply within our congregation, which is historically linked to Penang Island. It was here, as early as 1852, that the first Sisters of the Infant Jesus landed to open charitable schools, marking the beginning of a long and fruitful history of education and service to young girls of all backgrounds.
"Do not be anxious about anything, cast yourself into the arms of God..." — Blessed Nicolas Barré
Let us continue to hold our Asian communities in our prayers.
