A remarkable chapter of British history is coming home this month. On April 20th, Sister Mary Joy Langdon will officially launch her highly anticipated memoir, "A Journey of Service," in her hometown of Bexhill.

The book chronicles a life defined by extraordinary firsts and unwavering dedication to others. In 1976, amidst a summer of record-breaking heatwaves, Mary Joy made headlines by joining the East Sussex Fire Brigade as a volunteer, becoming Britain’s first female operational firefighter in peacetime. "A Journey of Service" offers an intimate look at her trailblazing years in the fire service, where she faced major rescues and emergencies in what was then an exclusively male profession. However, the memoir also explores the next chapters of her multifaceted life: her transition into religious life with the Infant Jesus Sisters in 1984, and her founding of the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre, a charity that has provided life-changing equine therapy to children for over 35 years.

Supporting the Next Generation

True to her lifelong commitment to public service, the launch is not just a celebration of the past but an investment in the future. All profits from the sale of the book will go towards the East Sussex Fire & Rescue (ESF&R) Cadet programme, helping to inspire and train the firefighters of tomorrow.

The launch event in Bexhill marks a poignant full-circle moment for Mary Joy, returning to the community where her incredible journey first began.
