Heading to Peru: A Living Faith in the Heart of the Andes

Within our congregation, present across four continents, the educational mission in Peru holds a unique place, inspired by the charism of our founder Nicolas Barré. In San Jerónimo, on the outskirts of Cusco, the educational community “Nuestra Señora del Rosario” – Fe y Alegría N° 21 – provides a quality education to the children and young people of the district.

The objective of this mission, led by the Infant Jesus Sisters (Jesus) alongside teachers and parents, is to integrate and promote the customs of the city of San Jerónimo. This commitment was brilliantly displayed during the recent festivities in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary.

An Education Celebrating Local Culture

For an entire month, the community lived to the rhythm of celebrations deeply rooted in local identity. Every Wednesday, the different levels (kindergarten, primary, secondary, and CETPRO vocational training center) prepared themselves spiritually by taking turns to organize the Eucharist. This year, the tenth-grade students (élèves de troisième) took on a traditional responsibility as the "Carguyoc"—those in charge of organizing the major events of the festival. The popular fervor was undeniable! Accompanied by the school band, the procession moved through the city amidst traditional dances and music to the church of San Jerónimo.

Passing the Commitment to Future Generations

The highlight of these celebrations is the passing of the torch between classes. The tenth-grade students officially handed over the responsibility of organizing the 2026 festivities to their juniors in ninth grade (élèves de quatrième). This symbolic ceremony includes the presentation of Detentes (Sacred Heart emblems), Panes jurka (traditional Cusco breads) and local drinks.

The strength of our educational community also lies in its roots. Former students remain very involved, such as the Class of 2000, which celebrated its silver jubilee and organized a sports tournament in honor of the patron saint. As Sr. Luisa Cayo Ttito explains: "Through these celebrations, we reaffirm our identity and keep alive the spirit that unites us as a family. The education we provide is, above all, a work of love and service".
