Very soon all eyes will be on the FIFA World Cup. It is not surprising that Pope Leo’s prayer intention for the month of June is:
‘To pray for the values of sport, that all sport may promote peace, fraternity and communion '
In a world where the physical and the spiritual often seem at odds, sport reminds us of the natural unity of body, mind and spirit. When done with this in mind, sports offer a great opportunity to experience God’s presence and grow in virtue. In Corinthians 9:24 ‘Do you not know in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Every athlete in training submits to strict training...’
Sport teaches us the importance of community and fellowship. Playing on a team teaches us cooperation, humility and the joy and challenge of working toward a common goal. Pope Leo reminds us of the Lord’s teaching ‘that in life as in the game, no one is saved alone’. We need others to grow, to learn respect, to overcome our limits, and to celebrate together the victories we achieve.
Sport unites people – whether you play, train or cheer. We discover in sport a universal language that brings cultures together, unites people and sows respect, solidarity and personal growth.
Sport offers us moments of silence and reflection, often overlooked in the intensity of competition. Finally, sports challenge us to face our limitations and our need for God’s strength In moments of victory, we learn gratitude and humility, recognizing our talents are gifts from God. In defeat we are reminded of our dependence on Him and the importance of perseverance. By engaging in sport with a spirit of faith, we can grow closer to God and build a stronger community.
