The grace of forty days…

It is time once again to make the desert journey and renew our way of life. It is a sacred invitation to conversion of heart, a time of prayer, fasting, sharing.

Pope Leo writes: ‘The Lenten journey is a welcome opportunity to heed the voice of the Lord and renew our commitment to following Christ, accompanying him on the road to Jerusalem, where the mystery of his passion, death and resurrection will be fulfilled’.

Lent is about making room for God in our lives. Through prayer, we can grow closer to God by allowing him to touch our hearts again, and by realigning our lives with the Gospel.

Lent is not meant to be a gloomy season but instead, a time of healing, freedom and spiritual renewal. A time of opportunity:

  •             To be a peacemaker through words and actions

  •             To give hope through kindness and compassionate words

  •             To be generous by sharing

  •             To live simply so that others can live

  •             To cultivate kindness and respect for all.

Nicolas Barré in Maxim 6, had this advice to give:

Whenever we decide to take our spiritual growth seriously, the enemies of salvation redouble their efforts against us. They arouse and stimulate the passions, plotting our downfall with more determination than ever. It is then that we need to increase our efforts and confidently appeal to the mercy of God for the strength to resist’.
