The month of May, the month of Mary

Devotion to Mary is at the heart of many people and especially during the month of May. In parts of the world you see May altars, May processions are held, saying the Rosary is intensified, visiting Marian shrines. All of this shows how Mary is esteemed and is an important part of daily life.

Although Mary’s path was unknown, she surrendered and trusted God when the angel Gabriel appeared to her, by her reply: ‘I’m the Lord’s servant, may your word to me be fulfilled’ (Luke 1:38) Mary’s desire to serve God was greater than her fears.

In her Song of Praise, the Magnificat ‘Luke 1:46-55)  She continued to praise God for his faithfulness in her life and also for future generations. In her words ‘He has filled the hungry with good things’ makes me think of Pope Leo’s intention for the month of May : ‘that everyone may have food, as he highlights how millions of brothers and sisters continue to suffer from hunger while

so much food is wasted’.

A challenge to us all.

Let us be encouraged by Mary’s life, knowing that God will lead, guide and direct us even in times of uncertainty. God’s goodness and faithfulness are consistent and steadfast. Let us trust him in the unknown.

‘Be in the hand of God like a brush in the hand of the painter; Like a pen in the hand of the writer’ (Nicolas Barré,  PM 31)
